🍂 The Shadow Season: Essential Guide to Autumn's Inner Work. 🍂
As the leaves transform into fiery hues and begin their descent to the earth, I find myself drawn to the quieter practices of my craft.
As the leaves transform into fiery hues and begin their descent to the earth, I find myself drawn to the quieter practices of my craft. There’s something about autumn that calls us to turn inward, to explore the shadows that we so often push aside during the brightness of summer.
I’ve been practicing shadow work journaling for nearly a decade now, and I’ve found no better season for it than the dark half of the year.
The veil thins not just between worlds, but between our conscious mind and the deeper aspects of ourselves we tend to ignore.
What Shadow Work Really Means
Before I share my favorite prompts, let’s get something straight: shadow work isn’t about dwelling in negativity or “fixing” yourself. It’s about bringing awareness to the parts of yourself that you’ve hidden away—often for protection—and integrating them with compassion.
I remember my first autumn dedicated to shadow work. I was terrified I’d uncover something terrible about myself. Instead, I found wounded pieces that needed acknowledgment and strength I didn’t know I possessed.
That’s the real magic of shadow work—it reveals not just our wounds but our power.
Creating Sacred Space for Shadow Work
I always begin my autumn shadow work by creating a dedicated space in my journal and my physical environment. I light a black or purple candle (sometimes both), brew a cup of mugwort tea (rosemary works beautifully too), and take three deep breaths before I begin writing.
Your space might look different. Trust your intuition on what feels right for you.
My Most Transformative Shadow Work Prompts
Here are the prompts that have led to my most profound insights over the years. I recommend sitting with just one prompt per journaling session, allowing yourself to go as deep as feels safe:
1. The Autumn Mirror
Write about a trait you dislike in others. Now explore how this trait might exist within yourself, perhaps in a different form. What is this reflection trying to teach you?
When I first answered this, I realized my frustration with a friend’s indecision was really about my own fear of commitment to my path. Illuminating.
2. The Falling Leaves
What are you ready to release this season? Name something you’ve outgrown but have been clutching tightly. What keeps you holding on?
This prompt helped me recognize I was clinging to a version of myself that no longer served me—the people-pleaser who said yes to every obligation.
3. The Harvest of Regrets
What decision still haunts you? If you could speak to that past version of yourself, what would you say with compassion rather than judgment?
Oh, this one brought tears. I wrote to my younger self who walked away from an opportunity out of fear. The compassion I found changed how I approach risks now.
4. The Ancestors’ Wisdom
What family pattern or generational wound are you ready to examine? How has it shaped you, and how might you begin to transform it?
I discovered how deeply my mother’s relationship with money affected my own abundance blocks. Naming it was the first step toward changing it.
5. The Samhain Truth
What truth about yourself have you been avoiding? Write it down, then explore what gifts might be hidden within this truth.
This prompt revealed my resistance to vulnerability in my craft—I was afraid to share my most authentic work. The gift was authenticity itself.
6. The Witch’s Shadow
What aspect of your magical practice intimidates you? What power are you afraid to claim?
I had been avoiding certain aspects of divination because I feared what I might see. Naming this fear diminished its power over me.
7. The Autumn Crossroads
Write about a choice you’re currently facing. What does your shadow know about this decision that your conscious mind is ignoring?
This helped me recognize when I was making choices from fear rather than wisdom. Game-changer.
8. The Dark Moon’s Question
What anger have you buried? Give it a voice on the page without judgment or censorship. What is it protecting?
I discovered my anger was protecting my boundaries—a sacred function I had been dismissing as “negativity.”
9. The Veiled Self
Who would you be if no one was watching? Describe this version of yourself in detail.
This revealed how much of my authentic self I was hiding behind “shoulds” and expectations.
10. The Winter’s Preparation
What truth must you face before the year ends? What conversation, decision, or acknowledgment can no longer wait?
This prompt often reveals what needs immediate attention in my life—what can’t hibernate through another season.
Gentle Reminders for Your Journey
I’ve learned some important lessons in my shadow work practice:
Set boundaries with yourself. If a prompt feels too overwhelming, it’s okay to set it aside for now.
Have support ready. Sometimes shadow work stirs up difficult emotions. Know who you can reach out to if needed.
End with light. After each session, I light a white candle and write down one thing I appreciate about myself.
Be patient. Some insights will come immediately; others might reveal themselves weeks later in a dream or quiet moment.
Shadow work isn’t about forcing revelations—it’s about creating space for truth to emerge at its own pace.
Integrating Your Insights
The most powerful shadow work doesn’t end on the page. After each journaling session, I ask myself: “What’s one small way I can honor what I’ve learned today?”
Sometimes it’s a tiny ritual—burning a bay leaf with an old belief written on it. Other times it’s a practical step, like setting a boundary or having a difficult conversation.
As autumn deepens into winter, your journal becomes a sacred text—a record of your courage and growth. Return to it on the winter solstice and acknowledge how far you’ve come.
Remember, we don’t do shadow work to eliminate our shadows—we do it to dance with them, to integrate all parts of ourselves into wholeness. The dark half of the year isn’t something to endure; it’s a gift—a time when the veil between who we are and who we might become is at its thinnest.
Happy journaling, fellow seekers. May your autumn revelations bring spring transformations.

Thank you for sharing your prompts. I am going to work with them, as they are really allowing to go in depth. 💜
I really like this:
'End with light. After each session, I light a white candle and write down one thing I appreciate about myself.'
I never thought to do that but it's such a good idea
