Hey beautiful souls! 🖤✨
How’s your inner world feeling lately? Bright and shiny? A bit stormy? Or maybe there are some cobwebbed corners you’ve been avoiding? Whatever your current state, you’re welcome here exactly as you are.
Today, I want to talk about something that’s been TRANSFORMING my practice (and honestly, my whole life): Shadow Work through Witchcraft. If you’ve been sensing some emotional blocks in your craft lately or feeling like certain patterns keep repeating in your life… this newsletter might be exactly what your soul ordered! 📮✨
🖤 What IS Shadow Work Anyway? 🖤
Before we dive into the practical magic, let’s get clear on what we’re talking about!
Your “shadow” isn’t something scary or evil (despite the spooky name). It’s simply the parts of yourself that you’ve tucked away because somewhere along your journey, you got the message these parts weren’t acceptable. Anger, sadness, ambition, sexuality, power - any aspect of yourself that was deemed “too much” or “not enough” by family, society, or even yourself.
As Carl Jung (the OG shadow work guru) said: “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” Whew, felt that one! 😅
The MAGIC happens when we use our witchcraft practice to:
Gently illuminate these hidden parts
Reclaim their power and wisdom
Reintegrate them into our whole, authentic selves
When we ignore our shadow, it often manifests as anxiety, depression, relationship patterns, or even magical blockages. But when we work WITH it… that’s where the deep healing begins! 🌱
💫 3 Shadow Work Rituals for Emotional Healing 💫
1. The Mirror Scrying Shadow Dialogue 🪞
What you’ll need:
A mirror (handheld or wall-mounted)
A black or purple candle
Pen and journal
Quiet, private space
Steps:
Create sacred space however you normally would (casting circle, etc.)
Light your candle and dim other lights
Sit comfortably before your mirror
Gaze softly at your reflection, letting your focus soften
Ask aloud: “What part of myself am I ready to reclaim?”
Maintain your gaze, allowing your perception to shift slightly (your face may appear to change)
When you feel a shift, ask your reflection: “What do you need me to know?”
Remain open to impressions, feelings, or even words that arise
After 5-10 minutes, thank your shadow self
Immediately journal what you experienced
This practice creates a safe container for direct shadow communication. Many witches are surprised by how loving these messages often are! Your shadow isn’t trying to hurt you—it’s trying to make you whole. ❤️
2. Burning Cord Emotional Release Ritual 🔥
What you’ll need:
A length of natural cord/string (black, red, or purple works well)
Small piece of paper and pen
Fireproof container
Water (for safety)
Steps:
Hold the cord between your hands, closing your eyes
Focus on an emotional pattern you’re ready to release (perfectionism, people-pleasing, fear of judgment, etc.)
As you connect with this feeling, begin tying knots in the cord - one for each way this pattern has limited you
For each knot, say aloud: “I acknowledge this limitation I’ve placed on myself”
When finished, write on the paper: “I reclaim my power from these patterns”
Wrap the knotted cord around the paper
In your fireproof container, safely burn the cord and paper
As it burns, say: “What once bound me now transforms me. I integrate these lessons and release the limitations.”
Allow the ashes to cool, then return them to the earth
This ritual acknowledges emotional patterns without judgment, then ceremonially releases their hold on you. The physical act of burning creates powerful psychological closure.
3. Dark Moon Shadow Integration Bath 🌑
What you’ll need:
Bathtub with warm water
1 cup Epsom salt
1/3 cup black salt (or sea salt with activated charcoal)
Optional: Black tourmaline, obsidian, or smoky quartz crystals
3 drops each: cypress, myrrh, and frankincense oils (or any grounding oils you have)
1 black or indigo candle
Steps:
Perform during the dark/new moon if possible
Add all ingredients to your bath while setting intention
Turn off lights except your candle
Before entering, stand before the bath and say: “I enter these waters as I journey into my depths—with courage, compassion, and wisdom.”
Soak for at least 20 minutes, allowing yourself to face any emotions that arise
When you feel complete, state: “I honor my wholeness—shadows and light. What I’ve learned in the darkness strengthens my light.”
As you drain the tub, visualize emotional residue draining away
Moisturize your body afterward as an act of self-love
This ritual uses water—the element of emotion—to help process and integrate shadow aspects. The dark moon’s energy naturally supports this inner work.
🌙 Creating Your Own Shadow Work Practice 🌙
Shadow work is deeply personal, so while these rituals provide structure, feel free to adapt them to your unique practice. Some important guidelines:
Start small: Begin with emotions that feel manageable, not your deepest traumas
Create safety: Always have grounding techniques ready (deep breathing, holding a grounding stone)
Practice self-compassion: Shadow work isn’t about judgment but understanding
Know when to seek help: Some shadows relate to significant trauma and may benefit from professional support alongside your magical practice
Integration time: Allow 3-7 days between shadow practices for integration
Many practitioners find it helpful to work with shadow aspects that correspond to the astrological season. For example, exploring people-pleasing during Libra season or control issues during Scorpio season.
📔 This Week’s Shadow Work Journal Prompts 📔
If you’re not quite ready for the full rituals, these journal prompts can gently open the door:
What emotion do I find most difficult to express? How might my life change if I allowed this expression?
Who in my life triggers strong reactions in me, and what might they be reflecting about my own shadow?
If my inner critic had a name and appearance, how would I describe them? What are they trying to protect me from?
What part of myself am I afraid to show others? What would it feel like to accept this part?
Remember, beautiful soul, shadow work isn’t about uncovering something “wrong” with you—it’s about becoming MORE of who you truly are. The shadow only has power when it remains hidden. As witches, we know that naming something gives us power in relation to it. ✨
Until next time, may you walk with courage between the worlds of light and shadow.
With moonlit blessings,
Astrid
